Japan and China but heads

It is no secret that Japan and China have had a rather turblent history. With disputes over gas mines, rights to small insignificant islands, Prime Minsiter Koizumi's repeat visits to Yasakuni Shrine, riots in China directed at Japanese, Japanese diplomats being blackmailed resulting in suicide and Beijing holding out on paying for the damage done to the consulate in afformentioned riots (take a breath)it doesn't look like it will get any better soon, or will it?

It seems the Chinese government is trying to calm down anti Japanese feelings by putting a stop to negative web sites and "toning down state media". Tourism in China from Japan is down since the protests and it fears foreign investors will pull out if the trend continues. It always comes down to money doesn't it?

Japan Times Japans Life Lines

I would like to point you all in the direction of a recuring series of articles on the Japan Times web site called LifeLines. It contains usefull information about surviving in Japan and is featured weekly on the web site. Recent issues have covered naming you child in Japan (not as easy as it sounds if you are a gaijin), permanent visas and even finding cheese. There are also interesting tips on laws and proceedures in Japan. You can submit questions from the web site or help provide answers for readers quiries.
I recommend anyone thinking of heading of to Japan to read it weekly so they can get an idea of some problems or issues you could face or should be aware of before ariving in Japan. Don't let some of the content deter you though,it's not all doom and gloom. Japan is a very easy place to live in and this web site can help make it a little easier for you.

The current LifeLine article features:

Where to buy western cheese in Japan
Yoga in Nagoya
How trim donw and oversized garden
Knitting in Japan

You can find the latest article here

Please note you will have to become a member of Japan Times to read back issues. Membership is free and you have the option of getting a digest version emailed to you daily.

Latest issue of Japanzine

Head over to this months latest issue of Japanzine. It's an online magazine all about Tokyo,Nagoya and Osaka. It covers issues concerning foreigners in Japan, has a great bar guide and fills you in on all the latest events going on in town. For a good laugh head over to Ask Kazuhide where stupid questions always get stupid answers. Japanzine also features horoscopes, music reviews, classifieds and a job section. It's a good read, I highly recommend it!
